
Araria, Bhabua and Jehanabad by-election results: Counting for the three seats began at 8 am.
The by-election contest in Araria is primarily fought between the ruling JD(U)-BJP and the opposition RJD-Congress, led by Lalu Prasad's son Tejashwi Yadav. For the two assembly seats in Bhabua and Jehanabad, the primary contest will be between the ruling alliance and the Rashtriya Janata Dal.
Araria saw a voter turnout of 57 percent, 54.03 in Bhabua and 50.06 percent in Jehanabad.

RJD chief Lalu Yadav's daughter Misa Bharati said in a tweet, "Credit to Nitish Kumar that there is no match for him to be a crutch for larger parties and stick to the CM's chair. But people of Bihar are angry at him. In 2019, they will be wiped away."

Bihar, where votes are being counted for one Lok Sabha constituency and two Lok Sabha seats, seems headed for a status quo. While the RJD is set to retain the Araria Lok Sabha seat and Jehanabad assembly seat, the BJP seems on course to win the Bhabua assembly seat.
"You've not jailed Lalu, you have jailed an idea. This very idea will destroy your ego," tweeted RJD's Tejashwi Yadav as the party leads in both Araria and Jehanabad constituencies in Bihar.

West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee congradulated RJD's Lalu Yadav for winning Araria and Jehanabad. "This is a great victory," the chief minister tweeted. A tweet was posted from Lalu Yadav's official account thanking Ms Banerjee's for her wishes. "Thank you Didi.. Together We are fighting, we shall fight & We will Win," the tweet read.

After 10 rounds of counting, RJD's Sarfaraz Alam leads in Araria with over 2 Lakh 30,000 votes Followed by BJP's Pradeep Singh with over 1 Lakh 85,000 votes.

Trends at 1 pm:
- In Jehanabad, trends show RJD's Kumar Krishna Mohan Yadav lead with over 14,000 votes. JDU's Abhiram Sharma trails after 13 rounds of counting.
- After 12 rounds of voting in Bhabua, BJP still holds the seat with over 6500 votes.

RJD's Sarfaraz Alam takes lead over the BJP in Araria. The BJP maintained lead in the first few rounds of counting this morning.
BJP's Pradeep Kumar Singh was leading by 2,321 votes in the Araria constituency, says Press Trust of India quoting EC officials.
Rinky Rani Pandey of the BJP was leading by 2,729 votes in the Bhabua Assembly constituency.
RJD's Suday Yadav was leading by around 1,200 votes in the Jehanabad Assembly seat, according to the early trends.
RJD's Kumar Krishna Mohan Yadav takes back lead in Jehanabad after BJP's Pradeep Singh was ahead of the RJD candidate for a brief period.

BJP's Pradeep Kumar Singh gains in Araria as he leads in the constituency, early counting tends show. JDU's Abhiram Sharma gains in Jahanabad.


The Araria by-poll is the first electoral test for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after he walked out of the Grand Alliance last year and teamed up with the BJP.

In Jahanabad, assembly by-elections was held after the death of RJD lawmaker Mundrika Singh Yadav. RJD fielded Mundrika Singh Yadav's son Uday Yadav. The JD(U) has fielded Abhiram Sharma who had won the seat in 2010 when his party was an ally of the BJP.
The Bhabua constituency was previously held by BJP's Anand Bhushan Pandey. The seat fell vacant after his death. The BJP has fielded Anand Bhushan Pandey's wife - Rinki Rani Pandey for the seat. Congress fielded Shambhu Patel who has been associated with the party for 35 years.
The seat in Araria constituency fell vacant after the death of sitting RJD lawmaker Taslimuddin last year.

On the day of voting, Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi Party had said, "Today's day is also of changing history and also of creating new history. Leave and show everyone how much power we have in our solidarity. The results will prove to be revolutionary and decisive for the future of the state and the country."
