Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday conceded defeat to the Samajwadi Party in parliamentary bypolls held in two Uttar Pradesh constituencies, one of which he represented five consecutive times in the Lok Sabha.

By the time a glum-loooking Adityanath congratulated the SP in an interview with ANI, the south-eastern constituency of Phulpur had already been lost. In Gorakhpur, Adityanath's own home turf, the SP had pulled to a seemingly unassailable lead.

The chief minister called the result "unexpected" and said the BJP would review "shortcomings." He said he accepted the voters' verdict, and promised to introspect on the defeat.

In nearby Bihar, too, the news wasn't all good for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party, which has become used to winning election after election in the past four years. Its ally, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal United, lost the Lok Sabha constituency of Araria to the Rashtriya Janata Dal.

The BJP, however, won in Bhabhua, one of two assembly seats for which polls were held Sunday.
