Senator Derryn Hinch has suffered a brain trauma after falling and hitting his head as he was getting out of an Uber on Monday evening.

It is believed the shock-jock turned senator had consumed two glasses of wine during a night out before he slipped and was knocked unconscious on St Kilda Road.

A spokeswoman for the senator confirmed he had suffered a minor brain injury and spent a night in The Alfred hospital for observation.

He is due to undertake medical tests on Thursday, amid concerns his heart may have been a contributing factor in the fall.

The 74-year-old senator previously swore off liquor after having suffered blood poisoning, advanced cirrhosis and liver cancer brought on by heavy drinking. He underwent a life-saving transplant in 2011.
