Nagpur: A two-month-old leopard cub has been brought to Gorewada Rescue Centre in the city on Tuesday morning after mother leopardess went missing.

According to sources, the cub was found abandoned by local residents on February 28 afternoon in Mendki forest area near Chichkheda under North Brahmapuri range. A seven-member committee was formed on March 1 that decided to reunite the cub with its mother.

“We waited for 45 hours to reunite the cub with its mother but the leopardess did not turn up. Hence, we shifted it to transit treatment centre on March 3 at Chandrapur,” said forest officials.

“It is very unusual for mother to desert its infant cub. There is every possibility it must have been poached. Electrocution is rampant in Brahmapuri forest division and there is resentment among people over bad management of forest areas,” said some committee members.

Chandrapur chief conservator (CCF) sought permission from PCCF (wildlife) to shift the cub to Gorewada for better care. Accordingly, it was shifted to Gorewada on Tuesday morning. Wildlife vet Dr Vinod Dhoot and Gorewada divisional manager Nandkishore Kale are looking after the cub, which has been kept at inpatient ward.
