Former Captain of Men’s Hockey, Sardar Singh, out of Indian team for Commonwealth Games

After poor performance in the Azlan Shah Cup, the former Indian captain Sardar Singh  has been dropped from the 18-member Indian men’s hockey team for the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. At the same time, experienced goalkeeper PR Sreejesh has made a comeback in the team.

In this tournament, midfielder Manpreet Singh will be the captain, while Chinglensana Singh will be the Deputy Captain. India is placed in Pool-B with Pakistan, Malaysia, Wales and England. India has to play first match on 7 April with Pakistan.

In the captaincy of Manpreet, India won gold in the 2017 Asia Cup and bronze medal in the Hockey World League Final in Bhubaneswar.

Experienced goalkeeper Sreejesh has returned from injury. After a spectacular display on the New Zealand tour, he regained his place in the team.

The 22-year-old Suraj Karkera with accompany him, who performed well in Bhubaneswar last year in the absence of Sreejesh.

Sardar Singh was decided to be out after the poor performance in the Ajlan Shah Cup, though despite the good performance, Ramandeep Singh is not selected in the team.
