The Meteorological office has warned fishermen in Kerala’s coastal region not to venture into the sea for next two days as a major depression in the Arabian Sea intensifies and is predicted to lead to heavy rainfall.
The state government has sounded an alert as a depression in the Arabian Sea for the last two days deepened further today.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the administration is in constant touch with the with the weather and disaster management offices and the necessary precautionary measures are in place.
Coast Guard ships are on standby while the government has set up two control rooms in Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram.
Meteorological office predicts heavy rains accompanied by winds with speeds of 40 to 60 kmph in south Kerala and Lakshadweep coast and the warning for fishermen to be in force till Thursday.
The alert comes in the backdrop of Ochki cyclone that hit the coasts of the state, neighbouring Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Lakshadweep in November-December last year, claiming the lives of several fishermen and leaving many missing.
