WATCH: Varsity Cup fan protest turns ugly

2018-03-13 07:31

Cape Town - Chaotic scenes blighted Monday night’s Varsity Cup match between the NMMU Madibaz and Maties in Port Elizabeth.

WRAP: Varsity Cup - Round 7

The game was halted eight minutes into the second half due to a pitch invasion.

Maties were leading 19-0 at the time and were awarded the victory when the match was officially called off.

According to the HeraldLIVE website, members of the South African Students Congress (SASCO) stormed the field protesting against what they believe is a lack of transformation in sport (WATCH the incident in the tweets below).

The Port Elizabeth-based website is reporting that tempers flared when protesters tried to storm one of the VIP boxes where Southern Kings head coach Deon Davids was sitting.

One of the protesters is believed to have grabbed the stadium announcer’s microphone and shouted “Viva Viva”, which elicited roars of approval from the crowd.

The protester reportedly said that black players were not fairly represented.

Chairs were then thrown on to the field before the referee led the players off.

Maties took home four points for the win, which cemented a home semi-final for the Stellenbosch side.
