In an attempt to fight the ever-increasing water scarcity and negligent use of available resources, the Koyilandy municipality has drawn up an action plan to make people water-literate by 2019.
The municipal authorities hope that an effective awareness campaign along with field-level action to conserve available water sources, will go a long way in achieving the target.
Jala Sabhas
Municipal chairman K. Sathian said that the civic body would invest ₹2 crore on the initiative, which was the culmination of the already held ‘Jala Sabhas’ within the municipal limits.
The five Jala Sabhas held in the region had discussed all major water-related issues, besides proposing specific action plans which could be considered for implementation, he added.
The municipality will declare its new action plan for the 2018-2019 fiscal at a special convention on March 22, which will also mark World Water Day.
An exhibition on the need to conserve water resources and a documentary on the importance of reviving abandoned water sources too will be part of the event.
“For promoting well recharge projects alone, we will spend ₹25 lakh. A separate fund of ₹50 lakh will be set apart for the creation or revival of ponds,” says Mr. Sathian.
The municipality is also planning to pool the project funds under the Haritha Keralam project to support the effort, he adds.
