Nikola Motor Co. intends to build a 1-million-square-foot assembly plant in Buckeye, Ariz., a Phoenix suburb, hiring 2,000 workers to manufacture zero-emission hydrogen-electric semitrucks by the end of 2019.

The Salt Lake City startup, which will relocate its headquarters to Buckeye, said the project will result in $1 billion in capital investment in the area by 2024.

Nikola will use hydrogen fuel stacks built by PowerCell Sweden to enable the Class 8 vehicles to run 1,200 miles between refuelings.

Arizona state officials have committed $46.5 million in incentives and training aid to the venture.

Until the plant is running, the first 5,000 Nikola electric semis will be built by third-party truck assembler Fitzgerald Glider Kits in Byrdstown, Tenn.
