Intolerance rules

| | Kolkata

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Goodbye Lenin” (March 8). There is no difference between the Taliban, who destroyed the Buddha statue at Bamiyan in Afghanistan and the mob that demolished the statue of Lenin at Belonia in Tripura, triggering a series of the desecration of statues of BR Ambedkar, Periyar EV Ramasamy and Syama Prasad Mookerjee in other parts of the country.

Fanatics are neither Hindus nor Islamists. Godse and the Taliban belong to the same religion of hatred. Recently, a group of Godses killed Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, a science fiction author, physicist, professor and activist at Sylhet in Bangladesh.

As a matter of fact, Mahatma Gandhi, Malala, Gouri Lankesh, Muhammad Zafar Iqbal or whoever carry some progressive elements with them, have always become targets of rabid regressive people.
