Around 5,000 persons participated in the marathon organised by the Coimbatore Urban unit of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam here on Sunday.

According to the party sources, there were four categories of runners - men, women, schoolboys and schoolgirls.
The run for the men was for 10 km, women five km, schoolboys five km and schoolgirls four km.
Coimbatore North MLA P.R.G. Arunkumar flagged off the marathon at the Nehru Stadium in the presence of former Coimbatore Mayor S.M. Velusamy, MLA Amman K. Arjunan, former MLAs and Coimbatore Corporation Councillors.
The party had organised the marathon to celebrate the 70th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and also in support of cancer patients.
The participants started from the Stadium, touched Balasundaram Road, took a ‘U’ turn there and returned to the Stadium.
Those who had a five-km run touched the Anna Statue Junction before returning to the Stadium and those who participated in the 10-km run went around Race Course as well before concluding the run, the sources said.
At the end of the run, around75 women donated their hair in support of cancer patients. Mr. Arunkumar gave away prizes to the winners in each of the four categories.
The sources said that 1,680 men, 420 women, 2,800 boys and around 900 girls participated.
