A Centre of Excellence for Disability Sports is all set to be constructed at Zirakpur on the Brazilian Model.

Announcing this, Punjab Local Government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday said that the work on Rs 200 crore Centre of Excellence would start very soon.

Sidhu, addressing the media persons at local circuit house in presence of globally acclaimed sports players Rajinder Singh Rahelu and Dalwinder Singh, said that the Center would be helpful in providing world-class infrastructure to the players suffering from any sort of disability.

He said that the Central Government would spend Rs 150 crore on this ambitious project. “The State Government has given 10 acres of prime land of Municipal Council Zirakpur amounting nearly Rs 50 crore for the project,” he said adding that he had cleared the file to this effect on Saturday evening.

Sidhu said that Punjab was lucky to have this institute in the State while two more centres were being coming up in Visakhapatnam and Gwalior.

“International level facility would be provided to the players in this Center. The State Government has already given its consent to allot the land to this project, which was hanging on in fire since long,” he said.

The Minister said that the entire work on this upcoming project would be completed within two years. “The Center would act as a breeding ground for producing the players of international repute for the country,” he said.

Sidhu categorically said that the State Government would produce class players for the Olympics, scheduled to take place in Paris (Amsterdam) in 2024. “The players produced from this Center of Excellence will bring laurels for the country by bagging medals in this Olympics,” he added.
