BJP declares names of 18 candidates for RS polls on March 23

NEW DELHI: The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) today released a list of 18 candidates for the ensuing Biennial Elections for the 58 Rajya Sabha seats scheduled to take place on March 23.



Former Maharashtra chief minister Narayan Rane and entrepreneur Rajeev Chandrasekhar, BJP general secretaries Anil Jain and Saroj Pandey, and spokespersons Anil Baluni and G V L Narasimha Rao were the prominent names in the list.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD), Janta Dal (United) and Congress were the other parties which announced the names of their candidates for Rajya Sabha.

The TDP re-nominated CM Ramesh, a businessman, for one seat and chose a surprise candidate Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar for another for the biennial election to Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh.

Congress declared names of nine candidates for Rajya Sabha, including the name of Abhishek Manu Singhvi for West Bengal.


RJD fielded Manoj Jha and Ashfaque Karim as its party's candidates.

TRS shortlisted J Santosh Kumar, B Prakash Mudiraj and B Lingaiah Yadav for Rajya Sabha.

JD(U) fielded Mahendra Prasad Singh and Vashishtha Narayan Singh as its candidates for RS.


The election for 58 Rajya Sabha seats, which will fall vacant in April, was announced by Election Commission (EC) last month.


Members whose terms are ending include union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad, Dharmendra Pradhan and J P Nadda


The term of office of 58 members of the Upper House, elected from 16 states, is due to expire upon their retirement in April-May 2018.


The vacancies to be filled are 10 seats from Uttar Pradesh, six each from Bihar and Maharashtra; five each from West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh; four each from Gujarat and Karnataka; three each from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Rajasthan; two from Jharkhand; and one seat each from Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
