A six-member gang of local people in Koyilandy attacked two guest labourers from West Bengal on Friday, alleging that they were disrupting peace in the area. Jayanth Roy and Hithesh Mandal, the two injured, were admitted to the Koyilandy taluk hospital.
The police said the gang members were drunk. The two were assaulted while they were having supper at their rented house at Attavayal in Koyilandy around 10 p.m. The gang had targeted the duo for the second time.
The house owner too complained that he was threatened by the local people for leasing out the building to the guest labourers. The gang wanted him to rent out the house to local workers. Based on the complaints of the two victims, a case was registered against six identifiable men under Section 147 (punishment for rioting) of the IPC. Police sources said the suspects had fled the spot after the incident.
