Helicopter Crashes Into New York City's East River

UPDATE: 8:43 p.m. EST — At least people were killed when a helicopter crashed into New York City’s East River, Sunday evening authorities confirmed. Six people were on board the helicopter when it went down, ABC News reported.

At least one person was rescued. The conditions of the remaining people on board remained unknown.

UPDATE: 8:23 p.m. EST — The helicopter that went down in New York City’s East River at around 7 p.m. local time Sunday was a Eurocopter AS350, the Federal Aviation Administration said, according to CBS News. 

The helicopter was reportedly submerged upside down in the river. Rescue operations were still underway and rescue divers were deployed to search the water.

Video posted on social media showed at least one person being walked to an ambulance on East End Avenue, wrapped in a blanket. Police officials confirmed the man was on board the helicopter, WCBS 880’s Alex Silverman tweeted.

A helicopter crashed into New York City’s East River Sunday evening, according to numerous local reports. First responders were deployed to the scene where rescues were underway, The New York Times reported.

The helicopter reportedly went down near Roosevelt Island. A video posted on Twitter appeared to show the chopper slowly heading toward the water before becoming submerged.

It remained unclear what caused the crash or how many people were on board. It was unknown whether anyone was injured.
