Woman’s FIR not received in Subarnapur

| | SONEPUR | in Bhubaneswar

Even though there is a circular that no technicality should be allowed to come in the way of prompt registration of offences against woman, a shocking incident of its violation has come to the fore in Subarnapur district.

The Subalaya police did not register a case and rather pressurised a woman for closing a case by offer of money.

Sources said a woman of Subalaya area was married to one Sanjaya Sethi of Khamaripada village under Boudh district in Sunaribarna Swapneswar temple. Her marriage was preceded by a love affair with him for a year.

After marriage, they were staying in that woman’s house. Sanjaya’s family members, however, were not happy with the marriage and coming there to persuade Sanjaya to leave the home and his wife.

One day, Sanjay absconded by taking all the gold and money from the women’s home. After looking for him for Sanjay for many days, the woman knew that he was in his home. So, she went to the Subalaya Police Station for lodging a FIR against Sanjay. But the police did not receive that FIR initially. Later, they pressurised her by offering money not to lodge the case but when the woman stayed firm, they finally received her FIR.

Finding the local police to be unreliable, later the woman went to the Sambalpur DIG office seeking justice with all evidence as to how she was given money offer in audio and video clips.

Social activist cum Gram Swaraj Vikash Samiti secretary DK Mohanty said some police officials are crossing all the limits and demanded that action needs to be taken against them. Meanwhile, the locals have demanded to set up a high-level inquiry committee to probe the matter.
