Police told not to chase vehicles

Following the death of Usha (36) who reportedly fell to her death after a policeman kicked the vehicle she was riding pillion on in Tiruchi, police personnel in the district were asked not to chase vehicles that fail to stop during vehicle checks.

The police sourcessaid that senior police officials have issued oral instructions to personnel not to behave in a harsh manner with motorists or chase vehicle and intercept it. However, if personnel received instruction from the control room to chase and intercept a particular vehicle, it should be done, the source added.

There are 5.12 lakh vehicles in the district with 2,365 accidents taken place in 2017. Over 60% of the road accident victims are two-wheelers and 20,117 cases were booked in 2017 for using mobile phones while riding or driving. Though cases were booked against vehicle owners and drivers for various violations, over 40% of the violation cases were booked against two-wheelers. Personnel on duty were asked to maintain vigil.
