While sounding concerned over the low percentage of the prosecution and conviction of the hardened criminals, additional director general (ADG) law and order and director prosecution, Ashok Kumar ascribed it to laxity on part of prosecution and asked all concerned to remove the loopholes. He expressed his concern over the matter while addressing a one-day workshop attended by prosecution officers who came from all parts of the State at the State police headquarters here on Saturday.
In course of the workshop, the officers were given micro level information about procedures, law, finance and other fine points of prosecution.
Kumar said that in the cases involving professional crimes like theft, burglary, fraud and those involving gangsters, a proper and through prosecution should be done in the courts so that the criminals do not escape punishment.
He said that the designated advocates who are not doing their work properly should be removed. He further said that the process of disposing of the confiscated items related to cases from the police warehouses where they are being kept should be expedited. He urged the participants to ensure that appeals are made in the higher courts against rulings letting off the criminals if they are convinced that they should be convicted and punished. “We must all ensure that the percentage of the conviction and punishment of the criminals rises. There should be no room for laidback attitude on such a serious matter,” he said.
Earlier, ADG/ director prosecution held an elaborate discussion with the officers concerned on the cases they are associated with and gave them necessary directions of how to better things. He took special note of the officers whose cases marked low conviction/punishment percentage and gave them a stern directive to make sure that the percentage rises in the coming days.
Among those present was the additional director (Law) Hari Vinod Joshi.
