In his 26-year career he has also covered the death of South African cultural giant Nelson Mandela, reported on four OIympic Games, Schapelle Corby's troubles and he spent weeks in London last year covering the recent terror attacks.

The announcement was made public on Sunday and Futcher told News Corp the appointment was a surprise to him despite being the network’s back-up newsreader for 15 years.

“I didn’t see it coming,” he said.

“These jobs don’t come up very often, so when they do, you’ve got to grab them and it’s really exciting.”

Futcher becomes Seven’s Monday to Friday weekday co-newsreader from Monday with Sharyn Ghidella.

He said he would still write many of the news reports he reads.

“I’ll still be hands on,” Futcher told News Corp.

“I’ll continue to write a lot of the stories that will be on the bulletin.”

McDonald will be filing on the Commonwealth Games in April and expanding his own sports television company providing sports packages.

He was a sports reporter for both the Ten and Seven networks before moving to become Ten’s Monday to Friday newsreader from 2003 to 2012, and then on to Seven’s in 2013.
