‘Mega walk’ organised on beach road to mark conclusion of survey

With the Swachh Survekshan 2018 coming to an end, GVMC is banking on a series of measures it took for doing well in the survey. With its third rank all over the country in the 2017 survey, expectations are high.

‘We have been able to get 50,000 more feedbacks from citizens and overall feedback this year is 1.6 lakh,’ says Municipal Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan.

“GVMC has also invested in improving the quality of public and community toilets,” he told The Hindu. Also to create awareness on reducing litter, dustbins have been set up in all commercial areas, he adds.

Dustbins

The dustbins are set up in several areas providing an opportunity to people to put garbage in it instead of throwing it in the open.

To improve efficiency and provide environment-friendly transportation without spilling garbage 900 dumper bins are being replaced with compactor bins.

Besides another 1500 will be set up all over the city in the next one year. In the area-based development projects in the Smart City project and at some markets too, underground bins will also be set up, sources said.

To improve transportation to the transfer stations and the dumping yard, GVMC has also acquired 50 small compactor vehicles of 6 cubic meters (Cum) capacity and 10 of 15 Cum capacity. Another 10 will also be pressed into service.

Marking the conclusion of the survey, Swachh Ambassadors organised a ‘Mega Walk’ on Saturday morning on the Beach Road.

Mr. Hari Narayanan who flagged the walk said in citizen’s feedback the city emerged top in the country. He hoped it would improve its rank with better participation by all sections of people and the hard work of sanitation workers.

Former Vice-Chancellor and Swachh Ambassadors’ Association convener V. Balamohandas said the walk was organised to thank the people of Visakhapatnam that made the survey and officials and workers.

Swachh ambassadors Shirin Rahman, G.S.N. Raju, V.V. Ramana Murthy, U.S. Sarma, P.L.K. Murthy, Jeeja Valsaraj, T.S.R. Prasad and Adari Kishore Kumar, Chief Medical Officer (Health) A. Hemanth, Assistant Medical Officers Sudhakar and Lakshmi Tulasi participated.
