Solar Mamas, a group of African women trained under a government of India support programme to harness solar energy, today enthralled Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting French President Emmanuel Macron, along with delegates of several other countries, with a heart-warming rendition of "We Shall Overcome" and "Hum Honge Kamyab" here at the Founding Conference of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

"Hum Honge Kamyab", a popular patriotic song in India, is a literal translation in Hindi by author Girija Kumar Mathur of the gospel song, "We Shall Overcome," which became a protest song and a key anthem during the Civil Rights Movement in the United States during the 1950s and 60s.

Today, at an ISA event, which was attended by several international heads of states, a group of women, popularly known as Solar Mamas, held the audience spellbound with their captivating rendition of the two songs amidst applause from PM Modi and President Macron.

Solar Mamas is a group of women from developing nations who have been trained under Government of India-supported programmes in harnessing solar energy at the Barefoot College at Tilonia village in Ajmer, Rajasthan.

The song symbolized the efforts of the international community to harness renewable sources of energy as it tries to limit the impact of climate change by restricting global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial levels.

The performance was part of the Founding Conference of ISA, which is being co-hosted by India and France.
