The over 20-km Majlis Park-Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section of Delhi Metro’s Pink Line will open to public on March 14 after official inauguration.
“The Majlis Park-South Campus section of Pink Line of the Metro network will be opened on March 14. The inauguration will be done by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal,” a statement issued by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) read on Friday.
Safety inspection
The inauguration will happen at 4 p.m. on March 14 and the section will be thrown open for public use by 6 p.m.
The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) had inspected the 21.56-km stretch from February 26 to 28, and clearance was finally handed over to the DMRC on Thursday. Testing on the segment, part of phase-III project of the DMRC, was completed successfully recently.
Trial runs
The 59-km Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor (Line 7) of the Metro network, also known as the Pink Line, is part of Phase-III project. Starting last year, trial runs on its other stretches have also been conducted. The entire corridor will open by June.
The Majlis Park-Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section has 12 stations, including three interchange stations at Azadpur, Netaji Subhash Place and Rajouri Garden. The line will also have four interchange stations that will connect commuters with Yellow Line (Huda City Centre-Samaypur Badli) at Azadpur, Red Line (Rithala-Dilshad Garden) at Netaji Subhash Place, with Blue Line (Dwarka Sector 21-Noida City Centre) at Rajouri Garden and with Airport Express Line at Dhaula Kuan.
“The metro on this stretch will also cross Dhaula Kuan at a height of 23.6 m [as high as a seven-storey building] to reach South Campus from Majlis Park,” the DMRC said.
Encircling almost the entire Ring Road (Mahatma Gandhi Road), the line, once complete, will be beneficial to a large number of commuters — especially those living in localities along Ring Road like Punjabi Bagh, Wazirabad and Shalimar Bagh.
On February 7, trial runs began on the over 10-km elevated IP Extension-Maujpur stretch of Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor, on which the new signalling technology, Communication-Based Train Control, will be “rigorously tested”.
