The Delhi High Court on Friday ordered the Election Commission to allot T.T.V. Dhinakaran’s faction of AIADMK an election symbol, preferably ‘pressure cooker, as used by him during the last election in the R.K. Nagar constituency and also permit him to use a political name of his choice after an appropriate hearing.
“I find considerable merit in the prayer made by the petitioner [Mr. Dhinakaran] and the application deserves to be allowed,” Justice Rekha Palli said.
The judge upheld Mr. Dhinakaran’s right to use a common name and symbol for political activities for civic polls in Tamil Nadu, till his main petition staking claim over the ‘Two Leaves’ symbol is decided by the court.
“I deem it appropriate to direct the Respondent No. 1 [Election Commission[...to pass an appropriate order permitting the petitioner [Mr. Dhinakaran] and his group of persons to use a common symbol [preferably pressure cooker as used by the petitioner during the last election for the R.K. Nagar constituency],” the judge said.
