Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday said the State had made it clear that the Centre had to set up the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and the Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee as per the Supreme Court order, and that the Centre had no other alternative.
The State had also urged the Centre to take steps to form the CMB within six weeks, as per the Supreme Court’s order, he said in an official statement. “These points were clearly conveyed by the State officials at Friday’s meeting that was called by the Union Water Resources Ministry,” Mr. Palaniswami noted.
On SC’s directive
The Supreme Court had said that a scheme had to be drawn up to implement the final order and other directives of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
“The scheme is nothing but the setting up of the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee. The Supreme Court has only changed the share of water and made it clear that there is no change in other awards given by the tribunal,” Mr. Palaniswami said.
The Members of Parliament from the State are continuously protesting on the issue and the State government will take all necessary measures to ensure that its rights and the interests of the farmers are protected, he assured.
