Youth’s death sparks protest in Puri

BHUBANESWAR: Locals of Arala village under Chandanpur police limits in Puri district on Saturday blocked Chandanpur-Jankia Jagannath Sadak by placing body of a youth, who died after drowning in a pond late on Friday night.
The villagers demanded compensation to the kin of the deceased identified as Naba Pradhan, 22. He had died after drowning in a pond while trying to fetch water to douse fire in the village on Friday night.

According to villagers, three people had set the house of one Rabi Jena on fire at around 11.30 pm on Friday. After witnessing fire in his house, Jena alerted his fellow villagers and requested them to douse the fire.

Naba along with other villagers fetched water from a nearby pond to extinguish the flames. Unfortunately, Naba slipped into the pond and lost his life during the process.

In the morning, locals staged a road blockade by placing Naba’s body near Ruan demanding stringent action against the miscreants and compensation to the kin of the deceased.

“We had informed the fire brigade about the incident, but the fire team reached an hour late. Had the fire brigade reached early, Naba would not have lost his life,” said a villager.

Rabi said the police should arrest the miscreants as soon as possible. “They had threatened me to set my house on fire a few days ago. Finally they did it. The ruffians need to be arrested within 24 hours,” he added.

He said the youth lost his life due to the fire accident created by the ruffians. “The police should slap murder charges against the miscreants,” he added.

The police immediately reached the spot to take stock of the situation. Communication was hit for an hour during the demonstration.

Girija Nandan Pattnaik, inspector-in-charge of Chandanpur police station, said the villagers cleared the road after getting assurance from the government officials. “We have sent the body for post mortem after registering an unnatural death case. We also registered a case against three people who had allegedly set Jena’s house on fire,” he added.
