The Freethought Party of India (FPI) and the AMOFOI celebrated the 109th International Women’s Day here. Party vice-president Harish Chandra Kar presided.
While speaking on the importance of the Women’s Day, party general secretary B Ramchandra CST Voltaire hailed the decision of the Supreme Court in totally rejecting the Kerala High Court order that had unlawfully annulled Hadiya’s love marriage with her lover Shefin Jahan and called for a provision of quality education in English medium at the Panchayat level for all children.
Besides, Voltaire pleaded that teenage love and sexuality are facts of life and as such, the same should be recognised as invaluable rights of the school -going, as well as college-going students and their love affairs should not be objected.
In this regard, he thanked the Union Government for coming forward to provide “Protection Homes” for couples fearing “honour -killing” because of caste, creed, Gotra and community factors.
Kar opined that all age restrictions for marriage should be totally waived as the same is being misused by caste-creed-minded parents and the police.
AMOFOI co-founder Swapna Bijayini said along with love marriage, there should be total emphasis on the norm of “one-child family”. A pair of lovers exchanged garlands on the occasion.
