Tierney's late goal lifts Revolution over Rapids
Chris Tierney curled in the game-winning goal on a free kick during stoppage time to send the New England Revolution past the Colorado Rapids 2-1 in their home opener Saturday afternoon in Foxborough, Mass.
Rapids rookie Niki Jackson's bump in the second minute of stoppage time gave the Revs one last chance to win it with a free kick, and Tierney delivered with a perfect strike over the Colorado wall.
Diego Fagundez also scored a goal for the Revolution, who bounced back from a 2-0 loss against the Union in Philadelphia in their season opener last Saturday.
Johnson had the lone goal for the Rapids in their first game of the season. Colorado was coming off a 2-0 aggregate loss to defending MLS champion Toronto FC in CONCACAF Champions League Round of 16 play.
The Rapids have not won a match in New England since 2010.
Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner made four saves while Rapids goalie and United States Men's National Team backstop Tim Howard didn't record a save as he let up both goals.
New England midfielder Isaac Angking missed the match due to an illness, but midfielder Zachary Herivaux played despite being questionable with an ankle injury. Colorado defender Kortne Ford was out with a left MCL sprain.
After a quiet opening half, a charging Fagundez rocketed his right-footed shot past Howard to break the scoreless tie and give the Revs their first goal of the season. The goal came off an assist from Cristian Penilla.
Minutes after subbing in, Jackson netted the equalizer off an assist from Johan Blomberg with his first MLS goal in the 66th minute to tie it at 1. Jackson's goal also happened the be the 900th in Rapids' franchise history.
Colorado faces Philadelphia in its first home game of the league slate next Saturday. New England caps an early-season two-game homestand on Saturday against New York City FC.
