The deputy CM said the government has initiated the process of resuming sand mining from rivers

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam said that the government would soon re-open sand quarries in the State.

In an informal chat with reporters here on Saturday, he said the government has initiated the process of resuming sand mining (as per the High Court order) from rivers.

When asked whether the State government was planning to involve private players in sand mining again, Mr. Panneerselvam said that the modus operandi will be made known soon.

To a question, he said that there was absolutely no change in the stand of the State government on formation of the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulatory Authority to implement the Supreme Court verdict on sharing Cauvery water. The team led by the Chief Secretary, in consultation with the Chief Minister, had conveyed the State government's stand in an unequivocal manner at the meeting held in New Delhi on Friday, he said.
