The latest FIR was registered in the first week of March against Boopathy, who was VC of the university from June 2009 to June 2012. 

The vigilance sleuths had assessed his and his family members’ income during his tenure as special personal secretary to agricultural minister during the then DMK regime from June 2006 to June 2009. DVAC had found that Rs 69 lakh worth movable and immovable properties he and his family accumulated during that period were not proportionate to the known source of income. 

“The accused and family members were found in possession of movable and immovable properties worth Rs 33.88 lakh when he became minister’s secretary in June 2006. As on May 31, 2009, the value of movable and immovable properties owned by his and his family members increased to Rs 1.17 crore,” noted DVAC. 

During the assessment period Boopathy and his family had accumulated a total income of Rs 83.77 lakh. During the same time, the legal income – from salary, agricultural and other sources – was Rs 26.75 lakh. During the same period the family had incurred expenses to the tune of Rs 11.98 lakh which means that he and his family could have saved around Rs 14.76 lakh, DVAC document stated. 

Murugesa Boopathy failed to give satisfactory account for the said wealth and it is reliably learnt he had acquired the same by illegal means, following which the DVAC has slapped case against him under sections of prevention of corruption act, after a detailed enquiry was carried out on him.  It is to be noted that DVAC in 2012 had registered a case against him alleging corruption in buying sugar cane harvester when he was VC of the TNAU.
