The following measures were adopted by the Ministry of Tourism to turn tourist destinations friendlier for the differently abled:-
At the time of presenting Detailed Project Report of a project under Swadesh Darshan or PRASHAD (National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive) Schemes of the Ministry, State Government/Union Territory Administration has to propose a mission explaining that ‘barrier free environment for differently abled tourists has been incorporated in the design of the built up areas of the project’. Besides, it is particularly highlighted in the sanction order of the project that ‘the executing agency shall put in place the mandatory facilities for barrier free access by physically disabled persons’.
(ii) A group of National Tourism Award of ‘Best Maintained and Disabled Friendly Monument’ is in being given to promote the agencies accountable for preserving monuments/tourist attractions to build barrier – free environment for the endorsement of accessible tourism.
(iii) The guiding principle for classification/re – classification of Hotels declared by the Ministry of Tourism has provisions for the following:
Personally designed dedicated room with easy to access bathroom and specially designed furniture including almirah, audible and visible alarm system and doorbell.
Easily reachable public restrooms and Ramps with anti-slip floors to permit wheel chair access to public areas and one restaurant at least.
