A host of people from the fields of music, literature, and cinema will recall their association with legendary singer Kozhikode Abdul Khader at ‘Sunayna’, which will be held at Tagore Hall here on Saturday to mark his 41st death anniversary.
They will include Khader’s fellow musicians, friends, and, of course, admirers of his melodies.
The event, organised by the Kozhikode Abdul Khader Foundation, Artists’ Collective, and Ghazaldhara, will begin at 9 a.m. A seminar on music and reforms will look at how music, particularly the tradition of ganamelas, drama songs, and film songs, contributed to social reforms in Kerala. The friendship meeting will feature more than two dozens of Khader’s friends and associates.
At the commemorative meeting to be opened by Minister T.P. Ramakrishnan, scriptwriter John Paul will speak on Khader’s life and songs. Novelist U.A. Khader, actor Mamukkoya, Kozhikode MP M.K. Raghavan, and MLAs will deliver talks. Tributes will also be paid to the memories of some prominent figures who enriched Kozhikode with their work in the fields of music, cinema, theatre, and literature in the second half of the 20th century.
The highlight of the event in the evening will be a ganamela featuring the songs of Abdul Khader, Baburaj, P. Bhaskaran, and P.M. Kasim. Earlier in the day, Hari Narayanan and Vinod Sankaran will play the dolak and the sitar, while Prasad V. Haridas will play the flute.
