At least three persons were killed and 14 injured after a massive explosion in a chemical factory in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation area in Tarapur town in Palghar district last night.
Manjunath Singhe, Palghar SP, said the number of casualties could go up, adding that the search and rescue operation was currently underway. All those killed, suffered blast impact. A total of six chemical factories were affected by the fire. Police informed that though the fire has come down, a few areas were still burning.
Initial reports suggest the fire was triggered by several blasts in the boilers and reactor at Novefene chemical factory at E-107 sector. It soon spread to the adjoining five factories- Unimax, Prachi, Arti, Bharat Rasayan, Darbar, all chemical factories. The impact of the blasts was such that tremors could be felt in the 10-15 km radius.
Fire Bridge put 11 fire tenders into service and the fire was brought under control around 5 am. The Revenue Department officials, Police, District collector of Palghar, a medical team along with ambulance too reached the spot immediately.
