All-party meeting discusses Cauvery

22 parties participate; focus on ensuring water to Karaikal region

The government on Thursday held an all-party meeting to get the views of political parties on the setting up of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

Chaired by Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy, the meeting began at around 6.30 p.m. and was attended by 22 political parties.

The government wanted to elicit the views of political parties to present its case before a meeting of the Chief Secretaries of the riparian States by the Union Ministry of Water Resources on Friday.

Court verdict

As per the Supreme Court’s final verdict on sharing the Cauvery waters, the Union Territory would continue to receive 7 tmcft for Karaikal region lying at the tail-end of the river basin.

The Karaikal region was dependent on the Cauvery for irrigation, drinking water supply and other needs. More than 10,000 hectares of land was under irrigation.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) had submitted a memorandum to the Lt. Governor seeking her intervention in convening a special session of the Assembly to discuss implementation of the Cauvery Management Board.

Minister for Public Works A. Namassivayam, Minister for Power R. Kamalakannan, Minister for Revenue M.O.H.F Shahjahan, leaders of All India N.R. Congress, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the AlADMK, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi were present.
