Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council has showed its willingness to suspend Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi from the council if they fail to respond to their notices in the 12,000-crore rupee PNB fraud by Friday.
The Council has so far issued two notices to both Modi and Choksi seeking explanation but are yet to receive any response. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai today, Vice Chairman of Council, Colin Shah said that they will approach the disciplinary committee and begin their suspension process. He added that the council has also submitted suggestions to the government on how to strengthen norms to avoid any financial irregularities in the future. Meanwhile, Mr. Shah said the incident has created more problems for a major chunk of small and medium-sized enterprises that is already struggling for finances. He said gems and jewellery exports are likely to remain flat this financial year due to global economic slowdown, but might grow at 10 percent next year.
