Elon Musk Tweets Boring Company Tunnels and Hyperloop Will Prioritize Pedestrians, Bicycles Over Cars

Elon Musk tweeted Friday afternoon that he was going to adjust his plan for The Boring Company tunnels. 

The original plan was for the tunnels to form an underground uncongested route for vehicles to travel through and avoid traffic. The new plan is for the tunnels to prioritize pedestrians and cyclists before vehicles he tweeted. 

The reason for the adjustment, he wrote, is so that people without vehicles, who rely mainly on public transportation, have a better means of getting around.

"Will still transport cars, but only after all personalized mass transit needs are met. It’s a matter of courtesy & fairness. If someone can’t afford a car, they should go first," read the tweet.

When Musk originally outlined The Boring Company, he planned to dig tunnels under major cities to alleviate "soul-destroying traffic." Musk tweeted last year that the company was already digging the tunnels under Los Angeles.

Musk referred to the new plan for the public transit part of The Boring Company as the "urban loop system." He said the system would have thousands of small stations, about the size of parking spaces, that would take people very close to their destination. 

The tunnels would be equipped with an elevator that can lower a vehicle underground and onto a skate in the tunnels so that it can travel at top speeds along the skate to the destination. A video he posted to Twitter showed that the smaller "stations" would be something similar, but for people. 

Photos Musk posted to his Instagram account showed the tunnels under Los Angeles, according to the caption, that are partially completed. It was unclear on Friday how the plans and the already formed tunnels would need to be changed or adjusted so that they would accommodate pedestrians and cyclists in addition to the vehicles that they were built to transport.
