Neighbours come to the rescue of elderly man as Perth home burns

An elderly man has been rescued from his home after fire broke out at his Palmyra unit.

The blaze started just after midday on Friday, with multiple units turning out to bring the fire under control within the hour.

There is no word yet on what started the fire, or how much damage has been done.

Neighbours helped the 84-year-old occupant out of his property before St John Ambulance crews treated him at the scene.

The man is understood not to have sustained any major injury.

Thick smoke blanketed Hope Road as the flames took hold of the property, but fire fighters managed to contain the damage to one unit.

Investigations are under way.
