Plans candlelight march in Vijayawada tomorrow

The Joint Action Committee for Prathyeka Hoda Sadhana will organise a candlelight march on March 11 here in which 31 associations, unions, and federations will participate, according to its convener Sunkara Rajendra Prasad.

Speaking after the constitution of a 10-member steering committee, which would spearhead the battle for Special Category Status (SCS) to Andhra Pradesh, he said it was time all sections of people joined hands to fight against the “step-motherly” treatment by the BJP.

He said denial of SCS meant there would be acute shortage of funds. This would prevent big industries, medical and education establishments from entering the 13 districts of the State.

‘No political affiliations’

Mr. Prasad said the JAC would encourage the general public and youth to participate in the struggle in a big way. Stating that the JAC had no political affiliations, he said the number of outfits would swell in the days come as many were in touch with the JAC.

He said an action plan would be chalked out. Demonstrations, rallies, human chains, and pubic meetings were being planned in the city and others parts of the State. “Special status is our right and we should fight to achieve it,” he added.

Mr. Prasad said outfits such as the All India Lawyers’ Union, Tax Payers’ Associations, A.P. Lorry Owners’ Association, Active Bicyclers’ Association, Muslim United Front, University Employees and Workers’ Union, A.P. United Teachers’ Federation, Students’ Federation of India, A.P. Union for Working Journalists, A.P. Journalist Federation, Helping Hands, Social Media for Society, Government College Teachers’ Association, and insurance and bank unions had offered their support to the cause.

Tax Payers’ Association secretary Anjaneyulu was present.
