New Delhi: The Supreme Court pronounced the verdict on a plea seeking legal sanction for passive euthanasia under which a person suffering from a terminal disease and in his/her last stage of life with no chance of recovery is allowed not to sustain life through artificial support system.
The court says it has laid down guidelines on who would execute the will and how nod for passive euthanasia would be granted by the medical board. A living will, is an advance written directive to physicians for end-of-life medical care. It pointed out that this may lead to the abuse and neglect of the elderly, especially if they were financially well-off.Supreme Court allows Human euthanasia. It will now be legal in India... joining the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia, Luxembourg, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, and some states in the US and South Korea.

Pls understand that what has been legalized by SC is PASSIVE euthanasia only. That means deciding when to stop further active treatment or resucitation measures. Active Euthanasia remains illegal. #PassiveEuthanasia

SC clearly told passive euthanasia has a persona's right and everyboday hve a right to die with dignity.I appreciate SC cheif Dipak Misra ji for announcing a historical judgement. #Euthanasie #SupremeCourt
When Pinky Anand's plea to pull the plug on Aruna Shaunag as part of #euthanasia appeal was rejected by Justice Katju, I was livid. And so I decided to read his entire judgement to understand what made him reject such a normal, legit request for ease of living (or dying..)
