News video: Waymo Self-Driving Trucks Will Soon Be Making Google Deliveries In Atlanta

Self-driving trucks are starting to make shipments in Atlanta.

Google’s self-driving sister company Waymo will begin piloting its self-driving semi-trucks in Altanta soon.

The trucks use the same technology as Waymo’s other autonomous vehicles, which are currently zooming around Phoenix.

They’ve made tweaks to compensate for faculty breaking, turning and major blind spots.

Each truck will be accompanied by a highly trained driver (just in case anything goes wrong) and will be shipping cargo for Google’s data centers.

The company has been testing its trucks in California and Arizona up until now, but Atlanta will see the first real deliveries.

Waymo hopes their tech will permeate the shipping industry, stating, “This pilot, in partnership with Google’s logistics team, will let us further develop out technology and integrate it into the operations of shippers and carriers, with their network of factories, distribution centers, ports and terminals.” Some industry experts have expressed worry over driverless trucks replacing shipping jobs, but others claim this technology is only meant to supports truckers — not replace them.

Product specialist Carl Johan Almqvist stated, “On public roads, we’ll use the technology to support the driver, not to replace the driver.” So keep your eyes peeled — your packages may soon be delivered by self-driving car..
