Academic stress is suspected to be reason behind the extreme step: police

A 15-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide at her residence in north-west Delhi’s Bharat Nagar on Wednesday evening, the police said on Thursday. No suicide note has been recovered.

Class X student Tannu, a resident of Wazirpur’s JJ Colony, was spotted hanging from a ceiling fan by a neighbour, the police added.

The neighbour called the police and informed her family members, who were out for work. Tannu was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared brought dead. The police said she had an exam on Tuesday and exam stress is suspected to be the reason behind the alleged suicide.

“We could not establish a concrete reason for the suicide as she did not leave any note behind, but her family said she was upset after Tuesday’s exam,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) Aslam Khan, adding that her parents, who are daily wage labourers, “do not appear” to have pressurised her for studies.

“The investigation so far has not revealed any pressure from her parents. We have been told that she was an average student,” Ms. Khan said.
