The intersection of Velachery Main Road and Mambakkam Main Road, Medavakkam, resembles a classroom without a teacher. There is no police personnel to watch over pedestrians and motorists and this emboldens them to do their own thing. Having a pedestrian crossing would have helped matters to some extent.
Pedestrians dart across the intersection, taking motorists by surprise. For their part, motorists don’t slow down on seeing a pedestrian crossing the intersection.
They zig-zag around crossing pedestrians. It takes just one misstep on the part of a pedestrian or a small miscalculation on the part of a motorist for an accident to take place. And accidents of a minor nature keep happening at this junction, says R Raghu, a resident of Perumbakkam.
The stretch, which comes under the jurisdiction of State Highways Department, provides easy access to Mambakkam, IT Corridor, Perumbakkam, Velachery, Pallikaranai and East and West Tambaram.
Besides, the intersection is a commercial area, and is therefore marked by heavy vehicular traffic through the day. Large number of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses and shareautos cross this junction.
Earlier, traffic signals helped pedestrians cross the junction easily. Due to the ongoing construction of a flyover, the signals and lamp posts have been relocated.
A Chennai Traffic Police personnel says a police personnel will be deployed at the intersection soon.
