Announcing the Summer Action Plan for power supply arrangements in the Capital, Power Minister Satyendar Jain on Thursday projected the peak demand of Delhi at a whopping 7,000 MW during the season this year.
Mr. Jain said the Power Department had last year ensured over 99% power supply during peak summer months, which means that power cuts were merely 0.06%. He added that this year’s target is to improve this figure.
Historical trends
Last summer, the city had witnessed a new peak demand of 6,526 MW on June 6 at 3.31 p.m. This peak demand was successfully met by the Delhi transmission and distribution system.
The government-owned State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) has worked out the anticipated power scenario for summer months — from April to September — this year based on historical trends.
The projections state that peak demand in Delhi is expected to reach 7,000 MW this summer.
In order to meet the increased anticipated demand, the transmission system capacity is augmented every year by Delhi Transco Ltd (DTL), and discoms prepare and execute their plans to establish a matching sub-transmission and distribution system.
This year, there is an addition of 1,040 Mega Volt Amp (MVA) in the DTL system, a new 220 kV sub-station has been commissioned at Papankalan-III and another 220 kV sub-station at R. K. Puram will be commissioned soon. Other than these, new transformers, also known as in-feed shave, have been added at Masjid Moth, Peeragarhi and Pappankalan-I.
Increased capacity
In order to match this increased capacity in transmission system, discoms have also added new grid sub-stations, new lines and cables, and have augmented the distribution system.
This exercise is coordinated and reviewed by the Power Department regularly throughout the year.
