Lack of manpower cause of delay: Chandrakant Patil

Mumbai: The State government is committed to considering bifurcation of the backward Marathwada region, Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil said in the Assembly on Thursday. Mr. Patil conceded that the government was short of manpower to execute the bifurcation plan at the district level even though it had a commission report recommending the same on January 5, 2009.

A one-member commission set up by the then chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh suggested nine districts of the region be carved out as three separate commissionerate. The issue was raised during question hour today in the Upper House by Leader of the Opposition Dhananjay Munde, members Amar Singh Pandit and Vikram Kale. “The honourable minister must inform us when this demand will be fulfilled,” the members asked.

In response, Mr Patil said the division of such a big region is not an easy task, since the State will have to depute senior civil servants. “We are ready to think about it but we don’t have the manpower,” the minister said.

Marathwada region has eight districts, including Aurangabad, Nanded, Beed, Osmanabad, Latur, Jalna, Parbhani and Hingoli.

The one-member commission had recommended that another district be carved out of Beed.
