The Kolkata Police has started a case against India fast bowler Mohammed Shami under several sections of the Indian Penal Code including 498A, which amounts to cruelty to a woman by her husband or his relatives.
Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police Praveen Tripathi said that the case has been recorded at Kolkata’s Jadhavpur Police Station on the basis of a written complaint by the cricketer’s wife Hasin Jahan on Thursday.
The other charges pressed against Shami are under Section 307 - attempt to murder, Section 323 - punishment for voluntarily causing hurt, Section 376 - rape, Section 506 - criminal intimidation. Four other family members of the cricketer have also been named in the complaint by the police.
Ms. Jahan has, over the last few days, made allegations on social media and television channels against her husband and his relatives. Shami on Wednesday denied allegations of torturing his wife and having extra-marital affairs. The BCCI also put Shami’s annual contract on hold following the allegations.
