Pune: The Nigdi police on Wednesday arrested two men for duping three families from Pimpri Chinchwad area under the pretext of selling pure ‘desi ghee’. The police have recovered Rs12,000, gold ornaments and a motorcycle, collectively worth Rs2.99 lakh.
The police have identified the suspects as Ashok Vishwanath Gangavane (28) and Ashok Namdev Gangavane (30) both residents of Bandalvadi village in Baramati.

On February 13, the duo entered the premises of Sai Society in Nigdi. Kusum Jogade (57) called them to her apartment as she needed pure ghee.

The suspects told Jogade that the ghee was from their farm and offered it at a very cheap rate.

The duo noticed her opening her cash box, in which she had placed some jewellery as well. Later, one of them diverted Jogade’s attention and fled with the jewellery worth Rs2 lakh.

Assistant police inspector Devendra Chavan said that the suspects were taken into custody from their homes in Baramati. During questioning, they admitted to their involvement in three similar cases. “The duo had sold the stolen ornaments to a jeweller. We have recovered 70gms of gold from the jeweller,” Chavan said.

The police investigation also revealed the duo had not been selling pure ghee. “They would sell adulterated ghee under the guise of pure ghee,” Chavan said.

Chavan said that along with the gold ornaments, the investigators have also recovered Rs12,000 and a motorcycle used by the duo to commit crimes. “The suspects are criminals on the records of the Baramati police. They have cases of robberies and body offences registered against them,” Chavan confirmed.
