To help her son overcome financial crisis, a woman smuggled ‘charas’ from Uttar Pradesh to the city and handed it over to her son so that he could make a quick buck.
Police said that Shamshad Begum, a native of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, brought around 1 kg of charas to the city on February 25, gave it to her son Mohammed Arshad and returned to her native place. The incident came to light only on Wednesday, when sleuths of the Commissioner’s Task Force (central zone) nabbed two persons from T Junction in Tappachabutra on charges of drug peddling. Police seized 1 kg of charas worth ₹ 4 lakh from their possession.
The arrested were identified as Mohammed Arshad (28), a resident of Shanker Nagar in Tappachabutra and Mohammed Aleem (28), a resident of Beeramguda in Patancheru, both natives of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and working as carpenters here. According to P. Radha Kishan Rao, Deputy Commissioner of Police (task force), the duo migrated to the city 10 years ago in search of livelihood and worked in several furniture workshops here.
“For the last few months, the woman and her son were facing financial problems. When Arshad informed the same to his mother in UP, she advised him to sell charas and earn money. Begum, on February 25, brought the drug to the city and gave it to her son,” he said.
The arrested, along with the seized drug, were handed over to Tappachabutra police for further investigation.
