An event exclusively for school children above the age of 10, the first edition of Makers Carnival is sure to ignite young minds

In the first-ever edition of Makers Carnival, organised by the American International School Chennai (AISC), an event for children in the age group of 10 to 17, there is a range of activities and is family-friendly.

A community run event, it has been organised in a ‘Show, Tell and Do’ format, where inventors and makers will showcase their creations. “The idea is to give the students of AISC an opportunity to understand inventions, creativity and resources; appreciate it and inculcate it in their everyday lives,” says Meenal Renavikar, a parent coordinator of the event. It will be a celebration of the makers movement, a place where people show what they are making and share what they are learning, she says.

At the carnival, participants range from tech enthusiasts, crafts persons, educators, thinkers, engineers, artists to even commercial exhibitors.

“Some of the AISC students had worked with school children firom disadvantaged backgrounds in the city on robotics and here they will make a presentation on robotics in everyday life. They will also give a demo on 3D printing and IoT-based projects,” says Renavikar. Similarly, glass makers and potters will provide live demonstration in which children can participate. The mission is to entertain, inform, and connect the makers of Chennai, while inspiring the next generation. To symbolise this, there will be on display a giant-sized pot that can be painted by the children that visit.

Visitors can also look forward to building arcade games with recycled materials, a hackathon and gaming through virtual reality. There will be artists creating scarecrows, dreamcatchers and also quilting and crocheting.

Entry is free for the event and children can be accompanied by their parents. There will be a host of catering and entertainment options. Entry is only for those who have pre-registered and is restricted to only 500 people. To register email vgeetha@aischennai.org

Makers Carnival will be held on March 10 at the AISC Campus, Taramani from 10 am to 4 pm. For details call 9822048779.
