Premier League clubs ranked by expected goals: How many should your team have scored?

HOW many goals should each Premier League club have scored so far this season, according to the Expected Goals statistics?

“Burnley, who are seventh in the Premier League table, are rock bottom for expected goals”

The Expected Goals (xG) stats have come into the mainstream football consciousness this season, after featuring on shows such as BBC’s  Match of the Day and Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

xG is a metric that allows you to evalute team’s performances by statistically measuring the quality of chances created in a game.

It works out the likelihood of a player scoring from every chance they get in a game, and comes up with a figure for each match of how many goals the team could have realistically expected to score given the chances they had.

This helps tell you whether the team played well and made enough chances to score, or if they got lucky and scored more goals than their opportunities warranted.

Burnley, who are seventh in the league, are rock bottom for expected goals - they should only have scored 22.74 so far this season.

But in reality, they have only done slightly better than that - scoring 24 times.

Their high league position is down to a solid defence.
