Pune: Instead of preparing for an SSC English examination scheduled for Thursday, two Class X students and their accomplices decided to rummage through parked two-wheelers’ boots.
On Wednesday afternoon, the gang of four minors succeeded in stealing a purse containing cash and gold ornaments, worth a combined Rs90,000, from a scooter’s boot in Kothrud. They were going to blow the money on merrymaking.
Their joy was short-lived, however, as Alankar police traced and detained them within an hour, recovering the entire loot. Taking into account next day’s examination, the police let them go with just a rap on the knuckles. “We did not take any action against the boys as two of them had to appear for the English paper on Thursday. We have informed their parents and told them to bring the children in for questioning once their exam is over,” Rekha Salunkhe, senior inspector of Alankar police, said.
Around 2pm on Wednesday, Kelewadi resident Alka Chavan had parked her scooter outside Nandan Square building in Kothrud. When she returned, she found the her purse missing from her scooter’s boot. “Chavan had kept some cash and gold ornaments worth Rs90,000 in the purse,” Salunkhe said.
Chavan complained to Alankar police, who immediately swung into action. They scoured the area an studied CCTV footage. “The locals informed us about a group of boys moving suspiciously near the scooter,” Salunkhe said. She said that they received a tip-off about a boy from Sutardara slums in Kothrud. “Our team went there and traced all four boys in an hour,” Salunkhe said.
Salunkhe said the boys admitted to stealing the purse from the scooter. “They also revealed they took only the cash and threw the purse under a truck, parked a few metres away from the spot,” Salukhe said. The police went to the spot and found the purse under the vehicle. “We found the stolen ornaments intact,” Salunkhe said.
“We will question the boys to ascertain whether they were involved in any other thefts.”
