Indian women come up with better show

India’s second string team, after choosing to bat, put up a better display in the second warm-up game against the touring Australian women’s team here on Thursday.

But a total of 170 turned out to be far from competitive as the Southern Stars captain Meg Lanning struck form with a half century and showed the way for her team to record a seven-wicket win with 24 overs remaining.

Australia had won the first warm-up game by 321 runs last Tuesday.

The home team showed some pluck with skipper Anuja Patil and Dayalan Hemalatha raising 78 for the third wicket, but once the latter was run out, India’s innings declined from a promising 120 for 2 to 170 all out.

Australia began the chase with openers Lanning and Alyssa Healy smashing 54 off 58 balls.

Then Lanning and Ellyse Perry added 77 runs.

Both Lanning and Perry retired after which Rachael Haynes and Elyse Villani took their team past the finishing line.

India and Australia will play three ODI matches at Vadodara on March 12, 15 and 18.

The series is part of the ICC Woman’s Championship in which both have four points each.

The scores:

India-A: 170 in 46.2 overs ( Anuja Patil 49, Dayalan Hemalatha 37, Amanda Jade Wellington three for 30) lost to Australia 171 for three in 26 overs (Meg Lanning 63 retd. out, Alyssa Healy 31, Ellyse Perry 38 retd. out).
